The New Market, Va. battle of May 15, 1864 was a defeat of Union forces. The Confederate Army used cadets from nearby Virginia Military Institute VMI to supplement their seasoned troop line. These artifacts from the New Market battle are as follows: 1- unfired musket cap, 1- .50 cal. mini ball, 4- .58 cal. 3 groove mini balls, 5-buttons of varied types, 1-strap buckle, 1-D ring 1 5/8 in., 1- .58 cal. round ball, 1-metal cartridge case of unknown origin, 1- brass stud, 1- .58 cal. bullet with an unusual metal base attached. Each May 15th the VMI will make roll-call for those cadets that participated in this battle with a reply" Dead on the field of honor, Sir" for those students that did not return. This is your chance to own a piece of American History. The buttons may take considerable research to identify and one unusual metallic cartridge case may be worth the entire package for its rarity.
