This form letter was to accompany a certificate (a final Check) to the family of Colonel Frederick Steele, a career soldier, for time of duty ending at his untimely death of January 12, 1868. Frederick Steele was a West Point graduate of 1843 sharing the classroom with Ulysses S. Grant (ranking 21) and Steele (ranking 30). He fought in the Mexican-American War, and was appointed Major General in the Civil War by President Lincoln after deceptively defeating Sterling Price and Kirby Smith's 5 brigades at Jenkins Ferry. After the Civil War he was stationed in Texas and in the Northwest. Later, residing in California, he suffered a stroke while falling in a carriage accident that ended his life. This letter was delivered to his brother Edgar in San Luis Obispo, Ca. Now buried in Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Colma, California. Folded in mailable, letter form, with minor loss at the edges. Very good readable condition.
