Early US embossed revenue stamped paper. Document, partially printed, completed in manuscript, dated March 29, 1756 at Salem, Massachusetts. Document directs the Sheriff of Essex County to attach the goods of or arrest two individuals in a suit for money owed by them. The stamp, Scott RM3, features a Pine Tree with the denomination III PENCE in the center. The outside ring reads PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS. Wax seal in upper left. Note: the first of these stamps was issued by the British colonial authorities under the provisions of the infamous Tax Act which was so reviled by the Colonists and ultimately led to the Revolutionary War.
