Colorado Central R.R. pass with an underprint of 1871. Reverse corners have some discoloration. The Colorado Central came into existence in 1865, and the first tracks were laid in 1868. On January 1, 1868, construction began on the first line connecting Denver and Golden. The company built the first rail lines up connecting historic Colorado mining communities such as Black Hawk, Central City, and Idaho Springs. In the 1870s, the railroad was a fierce struggle between local interests, led by W.A.H. Loveland, and outside investors of the Union Pacific Railroad led at times by Jay Gould. Through a series of reorganizations and acquisitions, it eventually became part of the Colorado and Southern Railway. Operations started in 1872 and lasted as the Colorado Central, only until 1890 when it merged into the Union Pacific, Denver & Gulf, which was subsequently part of the Colorado & Southern.
