Three different pressed glass "holders" about the size of a large dose glass. These items are quite unusual, with seven stippled "petals" resting above a circular base with stippled diamond patterns. The embossing of the store's name is on the flat glass separating the upper and lower portions. All thee are clearly made by the same company. Researching these little beauties was a bit difficult, but once we found one, the others fell in line quickly. These were all made for clothing/shoe, dry goods stores in Colorado, c1895-1900. I've never seen them before (FH). The Famous/Leadville/Colo. was a large scale dry goods store in Leadville for many years around 1900. Austin's was a well-known dry goods store in Florence, Colorado at the same time. Croke/ Denver/ & Thome was a dry goods, carpet and furniture store in Denver that completely burned down on December 2, 1901 with an $80,000 loss.
Now - the question - what did they hold? This is tough. Toothpicks? Clearly, whatever was in the top portion would be small, and run our quickly, so that the name of the store was easily visible, hence the "toothpick" idea. It does not appear that the pieces were intended to be picked up. But we are not certain... All are obviously very rare. Reed Collection.
