Number 286 for 639 shares to FGB Lloyd in 1905. Extra fine. Two vertical folds. Slight dog ear (unbroken) on bottom left. The Colossus mine is situated in Union County, N. C. about 4 miles south of Waxhaw on the Seaboard Air Line, and about 3 miles from the South Carolina line. Until recently it was called the Howie or Huey mine and was once known as the Cureton mine. At one time it was one of a group known as the Grand Union Gold mine. It was worked certainly as early as the fifties and probably earlier than that. Before the war Commodore Stockton owned and operated the mine and it was sometimes known as the Stockton mine. Considerable ore was taken out at that time. About fifteen years ago the mine was again worked and the production considerably augmented. Some three years ago a company began to cyanide the amalgamation tailings from former operations. [Bulletin - United States Geological Survey, Issue 293, 1906] The 1904 "Report of the Proceedings of the American Mining Congress, Volumes 6-8" states, "The Colossus Gold Mining and Milling Company, a Philadelphia concern, is now arranging to erect at an early date, a 1,000 ton plant to treat this vast gold reef, and will use the present 100 ton mill to work up the present tailing deposits (Al Adams Gold Rush Memorabilia Collection) Date: 1905 Location: Waxhaw, North Carolina HWAC# 57327
