This little Colt is the model 1849 Pocket pistol in .31 cal. 6 shot, S/N 275736 with a 4 in. barrel. The serial number indicates a birthdate of 1866. ALL NUMBERS MATCHING INCLUDING THE WEDGE. The stagecoach robbery scene on the cylinder is still visible, original varnish on the single piece walnut grips. The bore is dusty but rifling is intact without any pits. The cylinder clearance to the barrel is still within tolerance of a near new gun! All serial numbers are stacked on the bottom of the gun: barrel, frame, trigger guard, and backstrap. Interestingly, there are four sub-inspector marks on the gun: "G" on the left ear of the backstrap, a "W" on the right ear of the backstrap, a "K" on the bottom of the grip frame forward of the mounting screw and an "S" on the left side forward of the trigger bow. Further research would be needed as to why this gun is so heavily marked. These little pocket pistols were never military issued guns; however, it was one of the most popular carried guns by individuals throughout the war purchased in the commercial market. The popularity of these Pocket model guns lead Colt production for 10,000 units per year until the conflict between the states. During the conflict production increased to 20,000 units per year making this gun model the most produced Colt ever made. There is about 20% original bluing on the bottom flat of the barrel and frame. The Colt's Patent is stamped on the left forward edge of the frame, and the barrel address reads "ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK AMERICA" without any arrows before or after. The overall appearance shows handling marks of a 150 year old gun with little wear to the mechanism. This gun is an antique and no attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should this gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique gun is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value of the firearm. No sales to New York, New Jersey, California, and Hawaii. This is an antique, non FFL firearm. Overall length is 7 in. Please see photo for details. 1849
