This Civil War Colt model 1849 pocket pistol is .31 caliber, 5 shot, and with a 4 in. barrel. It is marked "ADDRESS SAMl. COLT NEW-YORK " on two lines. The serial number is 17158X made in 1860. The grips are varnish finished (civilian model) with wear on the lower edge. All of the screws are original with varied conditions. All serial numbered parts match including the wedge, arbor, and loading lever. The wedge is original to the gun but shows wear. Some stagecoach scene is left on the matching cylinder but is rough. This gun is in fine working condition despite exterior condition. External age is prevalent throughout this gun but the barrel bore is clean and crisp with 7 lands. The short loading lever works and latches correctly. The bottom of the grip strap is personalized with four joining hash marks, purpose unknown; possibly to identify your gun at the end of the day. The trigger guard is not marked for caliber but stamped with the letter "G" in its place. Of all the Colt percussion guns, the model 1849 was the most produced model with over 300,000 copies made. Many were carried West for the California gold rush, or carried for self defense during the Civil War, however, very few survive today. Date: Location: HWAC# 56211
