This is a Colt model 1849 pocket pistol marked on the trigger guard as.31 caliber for 6 shots. All serial numbers match as S/N 28489X including the wedge built in 1866. The barrel is 5 in. long with a latch style loading lever and a brass bead front sight. The stagecoach robbery scene is prominently visible on the cylinder with a matching serial number. The most interesting feature of this gun is that the cylinder has been modified on the forward edge with a perfectly matching plate to cylinder bore presumably at the Colt factory or a very competent gunsmith. The forcing cone of the back edge of the barrel is also about .060 in. shorter. This may indicate that the cylinder and barrel were matched for closer tolerances and efficiency. Another interesting feature of the gun is the barrel address: "ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" (all in single line). Some case hardening is visible on the frame and loading lever while the rest of the gun is patinated grey. The walnut grips are in good shape with original oil finish. The usual Colt Patent embossed on the left frame is visible and the letter "P" stamped into the left side of the trigger guard; presumably by Nathum Patch an ordinance inspector at Colt. The oil finished grip and the stamp "P" indicate that this gun was a military issued gun. The barrel has a bright bore with clearly defined rifling. A fine example of Colt craftsmanship unsurpassed by even today. If you are a Colt collector, this modified cylinder gun may be one of Sam Colt's experiments or one of his many variations of a common theme. This is your chance to own a rare Colt.

This is a black powder percussion gun. Check local ordinances before bidding.
