This is a Colt model 1851 Navy, .36 cal. S/N 12077, all numbers matching including the loading lever and a 7 1/2 in. standard length barrel. The gun was built in the second year of production, 1852; and wears a third design trigger guard. Because of early production, prior to the Civil War, this is a gun made for the commercial market and not cut for a shoulder stock at the recoil shield. The gun has a solid grey patination with about 50 % naval scene remaining engraved by W. L. Ormsby. All screws appear to be original and correct but show use and wear. The gun does not time well but is functional. Because of early manufacture, a Colt letter would not be available for this gun due to the factory fire of 1864. A slim-Jim holster is included and appears to be period for this gun. Many people do not realize that this is the gun that every man traveling West to the California gold fields carried and was marketed as a belt pistol by Colt. The gun got its Navy name based on the naval battle scene on the cylinder. No attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should this gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value of the firearm. No sales to New York City, New Jersey, California, or Hawaii. Please see photos for details.
