This wonderful piece is the Frontier model 1878 large frame, double-action, .45 Colt with birds-head grip S/N 1651X. This 5 1/2 in. .45 was made in 1886 and retains 85% original Colt bluing with polished sides of the hammer with top and back retaining 85% Colt niter bluing. Also, niter bluing is also identified on the trigger and loading gate as well, which accents the overall bluing of this fine piece. All model '78s except for the Sheriff's model were equipped with a military lanyard loop at the bottom of the grip. Also, the '77 and '78 model Colts, double-actions were the first to introduce a cylinder pin spring button release which was not introduced on the single action Colt revolvers until 1896. The grips are hard rubber with fine checkering with the embossed Colt logo and the beautiful "V" at the butt of the grips. The bore is extreme mint. This gun has incredible metal to metal fit. In this age of CNC machining; this gun would surpass any firearm made today. The fit and finish is extremely tight. Included with this firearm is a Colt historical letter, verifying its proper configuration and stating that the gun was shipped to San Francisco, Ca. March 1886. The factory letter also states that it was returned to the factory April 12th, 1886 and was then included with a shipment of three guns to Schoverling, Daly and Gales in New York City, New York on July 18th, 1886.

A fine addition to any fine Colt revolver collection for a wonderfully original and historic model '78 Colt .45 cal. in outstanding condition for a 131 year old revolver.
