This little pistol by Colt is the Pocket Model of 1848, AKA the Baby Bragoon, S/N 9331 presented on the frame, barrel lug, trigger guard, butt plate, and cylinder indicating the use of a gang stamp at completion. Built late in 1849. A production run of about 14,000 were built before being replaced by the model 1849 with a loading lever. This gun would have been carried to the gold fields of California and rarely survive today in all-matching numbers complete. The bore is clear and free of pitting in straight cut rifling which is consistent with Colt rifling machines of this period. A civilian varnish finish is still visible on the wood grips. A two line Colt address reads from muzzle to cylinder, the cylinder scene is barely visible, a 5 in. barrel, .31 caliber 5 shot cylinder, a silver plated trigger guard at about 40% coverage, a squareback guard, oval cylinder stops. A colt inspector's mark of "K" is visible at the forward screw on the trigger guard. There is a light patination throughout all metal parts. The Colt Paterson architecture is plainly visible in this model. And best of all- it is still in-time and works beautifully. This firearm is an antique and no attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should this gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique gun is at the the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value of the firearm. No FFl required. No sales to New York, New Jersey, Hawaii, or California. Please see photos for details.
