Colt 41 caliber Store Keepers model. This is the first double action Colt revolver called by Colt ‘The MODEL 1877’. The name ‘Thunderer’ was a trade name coined by one of Colt’s Distributors, Benjamin Kittridge who was also responsible for the names ‘The Peacemaker’ for the Colts Single Action Army as well as the ‘Omnipotent’ for the model 1878 large caliber double action. The Model 1877 D.A. came in various barrel length’s from 2 ½-7.5 “standard as well as special order barrel lengths. It Also came in two other calibers, The 38 long/short Colt, the’ LIGHTNING’ as well as the very rare 32 Long/short Colt, the ‘Rainmaker’. This revolver is the desirable 41 caliber long/short Colt and is a 2nd year of production gun and was originally nickel. This Colt revolver has the desireable panel scene on the left side of the barrel that is almost always worn off; COLT DA 41’ as well as the early guns only ‘German Silver Sight’The 1877 Colts ,The Peacemaker and the Omnipotent we all designed by William Mason the genius behind the World’s most recognized gun’The Peacemaker’.The 1877 came standard in blue and case hardened finish as well as nickel finish but could be special ordered in silver or gold plating as well as engraved for presentation. Special order grips of Mother of Pearl or Ivory could be ordered but standard was two piece hard rubber. A rare option was one piece hard rubber or on early guns only one piece checkered Rosewood. This gun has very nice but aftermarket two piece oversized Mastodon Ivory. These first double action had a very intricate mechanism that was referred to as the’gunsmith’s favorite’ This piece is no exception as it only works in double action . It has a nice bore and many favorable features. There is some cylinder scoring from the cylinder being turned while the action was not in position for that. Overall nice early example of a true classic used by such notables as ‘Billy the Kid’ and Pat Garrett, John Westley Hardin ,Bell Starr
