Original Wells Fargo Express Waybill book kept by the agent, William Daegener, who was the agent and gold buyer at Columbia, unarguably one of the most important California gold rush mining camps, now a State Park today. This unpaginated book, with about 200 pages, 8.5 x 14", has three sections, all sequentially numbered, for each year, with each year starting at Number 1. The book starts at #122 June 1, 1868, and ends July 27 1870 at #142. Daegener built a 2 story brick building for WF that still stands today. Many packages, probably treasure boxes, were sent to San Francisco. All of the packages here were shipped on the classic Wells, Fargo & Co. stage coaches of the Concord design. The overly expensive shipments in the ledger were undoubtedly in the classic green wood Wells Fargo treasure boxes. The probable treasure boxes were very expensive and stand out in the ledger. In example, July 12, 1868 entries 163 and 166 were for gold dust sent to the WF San Francisco office at a cost of $15.50 and $13,25 respectively, while the other packages that day were all less than $3. Single gold bars shipped, such as #277 on 11/15/1868 cost $4, and may have been included in the day's treasure shipment under the seat of the driver. Many shipments show the ethnic diversity of the central gold fields - with Chinese, Italian, and Spanish surnames. The entries show shipments to towns all over the Mother Lode to San Francisco. This is one of the best waybill books we've ever handled, especially because it is from Columbia, in the gut of the southern Mother Lode, just a few years before Black Bart robbed the stages.
