No. 434, issued to John W. Redington for 1905. Signed by L.B. Seeley as president. Printed on blue cardstock with vignette of steamer "Flyer." Endorsed on the reverse by Redington. John W. Redington (1851-1935) worked at Cambridge University Press in Massachusetts before joining the army to head West in 1874. He made his way to Oregon and worked for the Salem Oregon Statesman, but his appetite for a Western adventure pulled him away. He wandered Oregon, Idaho, and Utah as a tramp printer before serving as a scout in the Nez Perce Indian War and the Bannock Indian War. His small stature and young attitude apparently led General Oliver O. Howard to refer to him as the original boy scout. In 1883, he returned to Oregon and took over the Heppner, Oregon Gazette. He also published papers in Puyallup and Tacoma, Washington. Reminiscent of Mark Twain, he was a native humorist who would invent tall stories for his columns. He was married to Nellie Meacham, daughter of Alfred B. Meacham. (Prag Collection) City: State: Oregon Date: Inventory# 39163
