Commentaries on the Mining Ordinances of Spain: Dedicated to His Catholic Majesty, Charles III, by Don Francisco Xavier de Gamboa. Translated from the original Spanish by Richard Heathfield. Published by Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green in 1830. Two volumes bound together. This work is about the mining laws of Mexico and South America. However, it was also used as a foundation for mining laws in California's Gold Rush up until 1866 when Congress enacted more comprehensive laws. This particular copy was once owned by Adolph Sutro, who used it in readying himself for debates with Congress regarding his Tunnel on the Comstock. Sutro's autograph is inscribed on the title page. This copy is rebound in contemporary cloth and leather binding with five ridges and the title in gold gilt. 752 pages with three foldouts. 6.5 x 9.75 inches._x000D_
