Lot of six. 1) Virginia City. Rarity-4, pre 1865. Light, but readable strike. The history behind this cover is fascinating. 1) Addressed to 'Miss Ellen Vincent / care of Madam Lafon / Silver Mountain.' No state is mentioned, but it must be addressed to Silver Mountain (Konigsburg) just of over the state line and not far from Virginia City. Ellen Vincent had a very eventful first 21 years. As a child she remembered seeing dead bodies on the road near her ranch, vigilante committees, and floods that destroyed her home. After that last event, she arrived in Virginia in 1863 at the age of 23. Madam Lafon. I can't find any information on her, but she was either a school mistress or a prostitution madam with that title. Since gold had just been discovered and Silver Mountain was another rough town, one can only draw one conclusion. 2) Gold Hill. Rarity-5. 1864. Was this Mailed Before the Post office was opened according to the Nevada Post Office book by Gamett and Paher. So is it a forgery? They had the Gold Hill post office opening on July 13, 1862. This has a manuscript cancel of June 3, 1862. However, the United States Postal Service Official Book clearly states that the Gold Hill post office opened on February 13, 1862 making this very legitimate. 3) Virginia City 1864. Manuscript cc was the Yreka sheriff. 4) Carson City NT used to reroute cover to California. To Mrs. Josiah Brown. 5) Early territorial Carson City - April 25, 1862. 6) 1864 double ring Gold Hill with target killer.
