Group of 19 varied Comstock-related postcards from the Prag collection. Images represented include stamp mills, Union Mine, C & C, Consolidated Virginia Mine, Mexican Mill, and Virginia City. Placer miners and prospectors in the western Great Basin made two amazing strikes of gold and silver ore near Virginia City in 1859. The history of the area can be broken down into three main periods: 1) 1859-1865, the Years of Litigation in court over mining claim boundaries; 2) 1865-1875, the Bank Crowd representing the Bank of California, based in San Francisco, achieved dominance over the Comstock; and 3) 1875-1881, the Bonanza Group, four Irishmen led by mining superintendents John Mackay and James Fair discovered the richest ore bodies in the Comstock in 1873 (onlinenevada.org).
