Rare. The Comstock Lode: Its Character, and the Probable Mode of its Continuance in Depth by Ferdinand Baron Richthofen, 1866. 83pp. First edition. Richthofen was a Prussian geologist who discovered goldfields in California. At the request of the Board of the Sutro Company he was asked to study and report on the Comstock Lode. Richthofen discusses the geology of Washoe, the general structure of the Comstock vein, the formation of the vein, and the probability that it extends deep into Mount Davidson. He concludes: "The future yield of the mine, as argued before, is not to be expected from other concentrated bodies of rich ores, but from large accumulations of middle-grade and poor ores, which cannot be profitably extracted but after the completion of a deep adit. We consider its execution as the only possible way of securing the future productiveness and profitable working of the Comstock vein." Quite prophetic! Paher calls this work "a rare Sutro item." Howes R271; Paher 1668; Sabin, 71227; Not in Cowan. Water stain on front which diminishes on subsequent pages, 4" cover/spine tear, inscription on title page, otherwise very good.
