Lot of 11. All have different supt. signatures! All have RNs or adhesive revenue stamps. This is a handpicked group of checks that represent all the great mining supts. on the Comstock. 1) Stateler & Arrington territorial check issued to Ball in 1863, signed by Charles Strong (for the Gould & Curry). Strong was removed due to the excessive costs of the Sevenmile Canyon mill. 2) Dec. 1864 check issued to Desmond, signed by Charles Bonner (for Gould & Curry). Bonner was the namesake of the Bonner Shaft, an 1860s shaft for the G&C to explore lower depths. 3) Gould & Curry Silver MC, "dripping letters" form, 1867, signed by Louis Janin Jr. as supt. Janin was a prominent mining engineer who was educated at the Freiburg School of Mines. Before coming to the Comstock, he worked for the Enriquita Quicksilver Mine near San Jose, California. He began his work on the Comstock at the Mexican Mill and sought to increase silver extraction that was being lost in the slimes and tailings. Using a modified Freiberg barrel amalgamation process, he was successful in profitably re-working the tailings at the Gould & Curry Mill. He was put in charge of the Gould & Curry Mine in 1866, when it was struggling. 4) Hale & Norcross Silver MC, 1867, signed by CC Thomas. Very rare check. Thomas also served as the supt. for the Sutro Tunnel. 5) Empire Mill & Mining Co., 1867, signed by RN Graves. Graves was also president of the Bodie Railroad, which he co-founded with Henry Yerington and Seth & Daniel Cook. Like other Comstock millionaires, Graves made his fortune on the Comstock and then retired in San Francisco. 6) Gould & Curry SMC, RN-B and green NV stamp, 1869, signed by Isaac Requa. Requa was also superintendent of the Chollar Potosi, as well as president of the Central Pacific Railroad. 7) Trench Mill, 1870, signed by Bonanza King mining millionaire and US Senator James G. Fair. One of the four members of the ultra important Bonanza Firm. 8) Gould & Curry SMC, RN-C, 1871, signed by CC Batterman. Batterman was also superintendent of the Imperial SMC and Crown Point, among others. 9) Consolidated Mill, 1875, RN-D, issued to Haynie & Co. (VC lumber), signed by Bonanza King mining millionaire John Mackay, arguably the most respected supt. on the Comstock. 10) Savage Mining Co., RN-F, 1876, signed by Osbiston. He was the namesake of the Osbiston Shaft, owned by the Gould & Curry and Best & Belcher. 11) North Con. Virginia Mining Co., RN-G, 1879, issued to the Virginia & Truckee Railroad, signed by DH Jackson.
