An 1863 certificate for two shares in the capital stock of the Importing and Exporting Company of Georgia. This company, founded in Savannah, Georgia, was significant to the Confederate war effort -- its founder and owner, Gazaway Bugg Lamar, was a slaver and cotton merchant who created the company as a means of sponsoring and operating Confederate blockade runners. These blockade runners would bypass the Union naval blockade of the Confederacy in order to trade weapons, ammunition, and other supplies. Lamar himself advised representatives of the Confederate and Georgia governments including President Jefferson Davis and was held for three months as a suspect following the assassination of President Lincoln.
