This is an incredibly early piece for assayer Conrad Wiegand. Bullion Receipt No. 373, Gold Hill Assay Office. Received from the Savage Mining Co., per Chas. Forman, two packages from the Piute Mill, 226 lbs.. Signed Conrad Wiegand as Assayer per C. Shane. Two cent adhesive revenue stamp attached upper left. Measures 3.75" x 9.5" Chas. Charles Forman was working as the superintendent of the Eclipse Mill & Mining Co. in Collins 1864 Directory. He later worked at the Piute Mill and Mining Co. in 1865. The Eclipse Mill was located at the northern section of Gold Hill while the Piute was at the southern end. Charles Forman rose to the rank of Colonel during the Civil war and was a veteran of the Mexican War. He served as a Major General of the Nevada Volunteers under Governor Kinkead. (Ref. A History of California by James Miller Guinn, 1907 Vol. II Biographies, p. 659-60). Conrad Wiegand founded the Gold Hill Assay Office only five months before with financing from William Sharon. His life in Gold Hill was full of conflict and tragedy. He was even mentioned by Mark Twain in Roughing It. Weigand's death in 1880 was ruled a suicide, but foul play was suspected.
