Scarce check from this mining operation that was tied to the "Bonanza" discovery of 1873. Check No. 1557. Drawn on the Nevada Bank of San Francisco. RN-G. Issued for $70.10 to Wells Fargo & Co. on February 5th, 1878 in Virginia City. Signed by James G. Fair as superintendent. Stamped paid. Cut cancel with small tears and light soiling around the edges. Fair & Mackay followed a narrow vein of low-grade ore in the Consolidated Virginia and California Mine. In February 1873, they found the "Big Bonanza." It took several years to exhaust the gigantic ore body, which yielded more than $60 million or the equivalent of over a billion dollars today.
