#48 for 32 shares to David Turner (arrived in S. F. August 18, 1849) and Comstock in 1860). Signed by RW Billet (with withering article about him by Mark Twain) and president SA McMeans. McMeans was an original member of the Pacific Coast Pioneers in Virginia City and the organizer of the Democratic Party in Storey County. [Thompson & West]. Dateline Virginia City 1863. Incorporated March 19, 1863. 25c Power of Att'y revenue stamp. Not cancelled. Two vignettes: loaded ore cart being hauled up by a hoist and ore wagon on the road to the mill. Towne & Bacon printer. Bottom left corner slightly rounded. Some foxing throughout. Cedar Hill was the only location on the Comstock where placer mining was tried. The Cedar Hill Ravine below the hill was home to Virginia City's first brewery. As you come into Virginia City from Reno it is the last ravine on the right. Stone ruins are visible 1/2 mile up the ravine .#48 for 32 shares to David S. Turner. Signed by R. W. Billet and president S. A. McMeans. Dateline Virginia City 1863. Location: Virginia district. Incorporated March 19, 1863. 25c Power of Att'y R48z Nevada” revenue stamp. Not cancelled. Two vignettes: loaded ore cart being hauled up by a hoist and ore wagon on the road to the mill. Both are Loomis lithographs, different and quite interesting. Towne & Bacon printer. Bottom left corner slightly rounded. Some foxing throughout. Turner was a partner with Dan Dequille (when he was still William Wright) in toll road from Devil’s Gate to Washoe Valley in 1860. He was under consideration to be Nevada’s first Governor. Billet was a very early arrival in 1859. He was the author of the Washoe Stock and Exchange Board. Mark Twain roasted him in the Territorial Enterprise as a highway robber for this venture which ensured worthless mines would make money from hapless investors. McMeans was on the Comstock by 1860 also. The good doctor was a Copperhead and felt wrath of many on the Comstock. (Bio's on all, Description of the Comstock mining camp of Cedar Ravine and the Cedar Hill company are included.)
