On May 10, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized $3,000,000 of notes payable as Spanish milled dollars. Put into circulation in August 1775, these notes were used to pay for the initial expenses of the American Revolution. Paul Revere of Massachusetts designed and engraved the plates which were delivered to Hall and Sellers of Philadelphia for printing. Benjamin Franklin designed the "nature" prints as an anti-counterfeiting device. Franklin also provided the paper.
Framed in a 4 1/2 x 8 1/2 inch wooden frame is a well worn (AG-G condition) piece of Continental Currency from Philadelphia, May 9, 1776. This bill entitles the Bearer to receive five Spanish milled dollars, or the Value there-of in Gold or Silver.
