Copper is refined in electrolytic tanks that use electricity to move copper ions from a thick copper anode (poured into a mold at the smelter), through an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid and copper sulfate, and plate them onto a thin, pure copper cathode. In certain circumstances, the copper ions moving through the solution will create an undesirable dendritic growth on the edge of the cathode instead of plating onto the flat surface. These growths can look like branched corals or even plant-like, and they can become a beautiful nuisance in the refining process. Here is a collection of five tie tacks, two tie bars, and one cufflink made from these electrolytic copper dendrites. One tie tack is missing its keeper. See photo for details. These can clean up nicely in an immersive copper cleaning solution.
