We sold one of these out of the Prag Collection, and that one had been identified on the cert. (in pencil) as Colorado Territory. Likewise, this cert. comes out of a large Colorado collection. However, we cannot verify this attribution. Cornucopia mines in Colorado don't spring up until the 1880s. This company is not listed in Hollister. Newspaper articles from this time period (1860s) only point to a company with this name operating out of Mono County, California. Inc. in Pennsylvania, 1866. No. 36, issued for 200 shares to Peter Hollis in Sept. 1866 in Philadelphia. Signed by president Chas. Richardson and treasurer Blanchard. Not cancelled. Black border and print. 25 cent adhesive revenue stamp. 8.5 x 10.5" Folds. There is reference to this company on July 17, 1867 in the Daily Evening Herald, Stockton, California: "C. C. Bruckman today received from Cornucopia Silver Mining Company, Mono county, 4,469 pounds silver matte, valued at $5.000." In 1866, the Sacramento Daily Union reported on the mines of Mono County and mention the Cornucopia. Very rare. In the 1860s, the gold deposits at Bodie had been discovered, but that camp wouldn't take off until the 1870s.
