Bound Correspondence of Jeremiah Collins [b. 1850, Ireland; d. 1934, Washington D.C.], who, in 1885 established the Great Falls Tribune newspaper, and in 1889 wrote a history of the state of Montana, then formed the Collins Land Company in Helena, Montana. That same year he was appointed receiver of public money in the US Land Office in Helena, Montana. This volume is an interesting glimpse into a personal history of an influential Montana businessman at the turn of the 20th century. The 10 x 12-inch volume has 500 numbered, very thin onion-skin pages onto which copies of handwritten and typed correspondence have been printed by a method unknown to this describer. Pages 195 to 500 are unused. Date range is from 1896 to 1900. The handwritten name written on the book cover is Jere. Collins, and his signature appears at the end of each letter with a few exceptions: page 43 is signed by his wife, Letta E Collins. Among his letters are descriptions of his on-site visits to mines, his efforts to personally secure a claim on a mineral property, some political endorsements of his brother to be nominated to run for State Treasurer, a personal letter to Governor John E. Rickards regarding the reputation of a high school architect, and more diverse subjects, some of which bear the letterhead of the United States Land Office, although the content of the letters are often more about his personal interests than official state business.
