Nevada district, Colorado Territory. No. 981 for 100 shares to G.L. Haight signed by the secretary E.W. Whiskey and president H.A. Johnson. Dated Oct 26, 1886. Rare certificate territorially designated.
The Corydon was a massive swindle in the New York market. The company reportedly held producing mines at Nevadaville in Gilpin County with 2 operating quartz mills supplied with water from Clear Creek. The other lodes were the Excelsior, Lyman, Cork and Newfoundland.
The failure of the company was first announced in May, 1867 in the Baltimore Sun (among others): "failure was announced yesterday of one of the most extensive manipulators in Corydon mining shares in this city and in Boston ... Mr. John Leighton was arrested on a process sued out by New York creditors..." In August, it was reported by the Boston Evening Transcript "on account of the total amount of swindling and the dishonest course pursued by interested parties ..., it is reported here that the stock will be stricken from the list ..."
