Very rare territorial stock; we have no records of selling this! "Virginia Mining District" (printed at left). Inc. March 1863. No. 29, issued to company president Thomas Peasley for 20 shares in Virginia City in 1863. Signed by Peasley and secretary RW Billet. Not cancelled. Black border and print with small dog and Native American vignettes. Eastman & Godfrey Printers. 25 cent revenue stamp attached over part of the title. Deep folds with some separation. 5.25 x 9.25" Thomas Peasley was a pioneering firefighter and civic leader and saloon owner in Nevada. Before moving to the Comstock, he served in a San Francisco fire company. In 1861, he organized both Virginia Engine Company No. 1 and Nevada Hook and Ladder Company No. 1, helping to establish Nevada's first fire department in Virginia City, where he became the state's first fire chief. He also served as foreman of multiple engine companies, worked as a Virginia City police officer, and was Sergeant at Arms for the Nevada Legislature. During the Civil War, he fought alongside fellow Comstock firefighters against Southern sympathizers who attacked Union recruiters. He is also mentioned as owning a saloon in Virginia City in 1864. In 1865, Peasley and JW Hemenway leased Maguire's Opera House in Virginia City. Peasley was killed in a gunfight at Carson City's Old Corner Saloon (Ormsby House) on February 2, 1866, by Martin V. Barnhart, a disgraced firefighter. RW Billet was a very early arrival in 1859. He was the author of the Washoe Stock and Exchange Board. Mark Twain roasted him in the Territorial Enterprise as a highway robber for this venture which ensured worthless mines would make money from hapless investors.
