Incredible Cowlitz basket, possibly made by Mary Kiona. Imbricated baskets originated in the area of western Washington, with more coils to the inch, more stitches in the same space, and also more beautiful designs than those from the eastern slope tribes. This twined utility burden basket is typical of the style made for the basket maker’s own use. Basket has 1" area of dmage to the rim and one leather lop is broken, otherwise it is in great condition. 9.5" x 12.5" x 9.25", oval shape. "Facts about the Cowlitz Native Indian Tribe: Flatheads, The Cowlitz tribe were a Native American Indian people, members of the Chinook nation, who controlled areas on the western part of the Columbia river. The Cowlitz tribe belonged to the coastal division of the Salishan linguistic family, yet shared a similar lifestyle to the inland tribes."(Courtesy www.warpaths2peacepipes.com) Date: c. 1900's Location: Washington HWAC# 64459
