Wooden cradle board from a Great Plains tribe made with a simple frame of four pieces of sawn lumber stitched together with 3mm, multi-ply cotton rope and native-tanned leather ties. The top ends of the frame are decorated with 3/8-inch brass upholstery tack in a tall A pattern with two flat-head tacks at the apex of each A. Commercial cloth wrapping is made from an outer layer of blue velveteen and a patterned cotton cloth, all pieced together with machine stitching. It is lined with a light cotton canvas material. The outer surface is covered with 184 3/4-inch cowrie shells arranged in rows of 5 to 7 shells individually held on with cotton thread. Cowrie shells came to the Great Plains tribes as a substitute for traditionally carved elk teeth. These and dentallium shells, metal coins, and large Crow glass beads are symbols of status among the Tribes. This cradle board has been lightly used and is in very good condition. Approx. 37 x 10 x 9 inches. See photos for design details. Thanks to Norm DeLorme for description details.
