Antique Short Handle Cricket Bat manufactured by F. H. Ayres Ltd, London. Tag states c. 1910. Etched/impressed in the bat below the handle is manufacturer's notation: "Although this bat is made from the finest, specially selected close bark willow naturally seasoned, it is imperative that the face and edges be well oiled with pure raw linseed oil before using. An old ball should be played with before using the bat in a match." On the face side of the bat, a few inches below the base of the handle, is an impressed signature. first capital letter possibly a G., last name may be Macarlnel (could be Macarthur). Below signature is REG9. Above the signature the words SHORT HANDLE and F. H. Ayres Ltd Manufacturers London are impressed into the wood. Dimensions of bat: length: 33 1/2" (handle 11 5/8" long), bat face width 4 1/4". Ball is included, very worn, strings exposed but everything intact, diameter approx. 3", circumference approx. 9".
