Though flower-shaped, Crinoids are animals, not plants, which have inhabited the earth's oceans for hundreds of millions of years and exist to the present day. Often called sea lilies because of their floral appearance, they are commonly attached to the sea bottom by a long stalk from which a plumose assemblage of feeding arms extends in a radial pattern from a central body called a cup. These feathery-looking arms capture and direct food to the central mouth. Like Brittle Stars, they are in the phylum Echinodermata in the class Crinoidea. They first appear in the fossil record of the Ordovician period (late-Paleozoic) and flourished to varying degrees until the Permian mass extinction. Today about 600 species exist in the world's oceans. The crinoid fossils on these two slabs have been carefully revealed by sand-blasting away the sediment matrix and sealing the crinoid to highlight its delicate form. One slab is approximately 8x9 inches, and the other is about 6x9 inches. Together as a pair or separately they are ready for prominent display in home or office. City: State: Date: Ordovician Era
