Stock Certificate from the Cripple Creek District Railway Co. Incorporated in 1897 in Colorado. Certificate number 12 issued on April 13th, 1897 at Cripple Creek to Irving Howbert. Signed by president and secretary. Printed by New York Bank Note. Size 8 by 11 inches. In nice condition. Discoloration where stock was attached to book. Bright and colorful. Cancelled. Issued to Irving Howbert. Howbert, along with General William Jackson Palmer, helped found Colorado Springs. In 1864, he enlisted in the Third Colorado Cavalry and fought with Colonel John Chivington in the Indian battle known as the Sand Creek Massacre in southeastern Colorado. He served as County Clerk and Recorder of El Paso County and later in the Colorado State Senate. This stock has an allegorical woman vignette and fancy brown scroll-work, under-print for common stock. This company was organized on April 13, 1897, by Lucian D. Ross, Thomas Burk, James L. Lindsay, W.T. Doubt and Kurnel R. Babbitt to operate a 6.25-mile standard gauge railway with an overhead line between Cripple Creek and Victor, Colorado.
