Solano and Napa Counties Directory, Including the Cities and Towns of Vallejo, Napa City, Benicia, Suisun, Fairfield, Dixon, Rio Vista, Batavia, Binghampton, Bridgeport, Vaca, Vacaville, St. Helena, Calistoga, Denverton, Main Prairie, etc., For 1871-72, Containing the names, business and location of merchants, miners, farmers, manufacturers, professional men, book-keepers, salesmen, clerks, and all adult male citizens of the county. Also, Railroads, stage lines, corporations, companies, mills, schools, churches, etc. Together with a sketch of the cities and towns mentioned above. Complete general and business directory of the residents of Solano and Napa Counties, Published by County Directory Publishing Company. Sacramento. H.S. Crocker & Co. Stationers and Printers. 1871. 18 pages in front of incredible ads. UNDIGITIZED. 391 Pages. Does not appear to have any missing pages. Page 328 and 328 have a 3 x 4 inch rectangle of brown discoloration on the upper inside portion of the pages, because a small news clipping is has been sandwiched between the pages, probably since it was printed in 1944. The clipping headline reads: "Estate Of $91,646 Left By Postman" The following paragraphs give the man's name and his designated beneficiaries, which include some Fraternal Organizations and a Jesuit "retreat", among others. Aside from that unusual detail, the inside pages are clean and whole and mostly clean, in very good condition. Page 6 of this Directory is of particular interest. It is a full page ad for J. R. Sumner, Auctioneer and Commission Merchant in Vallejo and includes an incredible illustration, but that is only the beginning. Every standard printed inside, odd-numbered page of the Directory has a sentence printed in the outside margin related to Sumner or the ad on page 6, some humorous. Likewise, the top and bottom margins are dedicated to advertisers J. Jacobs and the Pettis Bros. Even numbered pages have the same ad feature but for Farnham & Voorhees, Sacramento Seminary for Young Ladies and G. P. Plaisted Kitchen Furniture. The margin ad verbiage varies from page to page, but the advertisers are consistent. At page 200 there is a small ad insert for John G. Hodge & Co. trimmed to 2/3 the regular page size and printed on slightly different paper. Other ads are scattered throughout, with different formats all designed to draw attention. Great old directory. This, as with several other directories listed, is referenced online through genealogy research services, but we were unable to access the full directory in digital format and were often directed to a physical research library, most in Utah. It does not appear that this is available in digital format. Outside covers are original with repairs but legible and not badly soiled. Very Good condition, but please see photos to assess condition on all auction items. Worn edges on spine and board corners. Overall a GREAT piece.
