Lot of 5 silver-gold ore specimens collected from the Crown Point Mine within the Comstock Lode. Samples range from 1 to 3 inches in diameter. Minerals species within these bonanza ore samples include argentite, chalcopyrite, electrum, galena, polybasite, pyrargyrite, sphalerite and stephanite. The ore from the Gold Hill Mines ran higher in gold than the ores further north from the Comstock Mines in Virginia City. Labels on three samples have assay values ranging from $600, $3000 and $9000 per ton. With Silver at $1.29 per troy ounce and gold at $20.67 per troy ounce, these are indeed “High Grade” ore samples! The initial silver and gold strikes on the Comstock started declining in the second half of the 1860’s. However, in January of 1871 a new rich ore body discovered in the Crown Point Mine revitalized the Comstock. The claim was between the Belcher and Kentuck mines in Gold Hill adjacent and south of Virginia City. The ravine going west up the mountain was named the Crown Point Ravine which was traversed by a trestle of the same name that allowed the Virginia & Truckee Rail Road to traverse high over the mining property.
