A Ramble in the Footsteps of Alexander Selkirk with Sketched and Adventure in California and Washoe by J. Ross Browne 1864. 436pp. Many woodcuts. Dark brown buckram hardback. Tales of an American Crusoe, stranded on San Fernandez in the mid-1800s, with the author's adventures in California and the Washoe Mines in the early 1860's (p.309-436). J. Ross Brown revisited Washoe a few years later and wrote another short story on his findings. Both appeared in Harper's Magazine. It is said that Mark Twain adopted much of J. Ross Browne's writing style and humor a decade later. The engravings of colorful characters and California scenes are outstanding as the author was quite an artist in his travels which found favor in Harper's Magazine. Spine is starting but does not affect title or author. HOWES B876. COWAN, p.78.
