Round Mountain is one of the giant gold deposits of the world. The total metal content of the system is estimated at approximately 20 million ounces of gold. The Round Mountain Mine has been developed by numerous old underground mines as well as a huge, modern open pit which has obliterated some of the older workings. Total production from the Round Mountain Mine was approximately 13 million ounces of gold for the period 1906 to 2015. While most of the open pit gold production comes from low-grade sulfide ores grading in the neighborhood of 0.018 ounce per ton, during the last couple decades numerous small pockets of well-crystallized native gold have been encountered. Fantastic, collector-quality gold specimens such as this piece have been occasionally been available from the Round Mountain Mine. These incredible crystallized gold specimens have been rapidly absorbed into the worldwide specimen market and the supply of new specimens has ended, as the mine owners have ended specimen recovery and all "gold ore" is going to the smelter. It is interesting to note that many Round Mountain Mine gold specimens have a "whiter" yellow-gold color than gold specimens from other mining provinces, due to the high silver content of the gold from Round Mountain. The razor-sharp gold crystallization observed on this specimen makes it highly collectible. Dimensions (cm): 2.5 H x 3.5 W x 0.9 D. 26.4 grams.
