Very early. Certificate number 2047, issued for one share to Eunice Cutts Nye on March 5th, 1830 in Portland (Maine). Signed by president A. Newhall and the cashier (illegible). Not cancelled. Black print. 6 x 8" Horizontal fold. This bank was succeeded by the Maine Bank in 1831 with the same management. It closed 8 years later. In 1814, kegs of gold & silver coins from this bank being sent to the Marrett House in Standish for safekeeping. The floor in one of the rooms was strengthened at this time to take the unusual weight. In 1818, the bank was robbed for $200,000 (most in bills). The bank offered a $10,000 reward. The suspect was Daniel Manley, a store owner on Long Wharf, who had been seen eyeing the vault lock when it was being repaired at the blacksmith. He was caught and sentenced to 12 years in prison. No information could be located about the bank president Albert Newhall.
