Pair of rare, very early sock certificates from Cumberland Telephone & Telegraph Company, dated 1884 and 1903. The 1884 document is signed by E.S. Babcock, President and E. Baker, Secretary, for 5 shares at $100.00 each. There are great vignettes of telephone poles, with a wall-mount telephone. The border is ornate, with intricate corner medallions. The 1903 certificate has a large central vignette, and a more modern border surround. The Cumberland Telephone & Telegraph Co. was formed June 8, 1883, and operated under exclusive license from AT&T. Purchased by Southern Bell in 1912, it continued to operate as Cumberland until 1926 when it became Southern Bell. Both documents are in near excellent condition, with some very minor staining on the left sides of each. Rare. (Prag Collection)
