Large collection of ephemera discussing the history of our currency: 1810: discount on bank bills (ex. Vermont, all branches); 1816: paper currency in circulation compared to specie (7:1)
1834: Congressional Globe - discount of broker banks, argument of specie versus paper money; 1846: very important letter from Wm. Blassum to Geo. Watriss about a man named Hopkins passing notes from "two" banks mentioned are Merchants Bank (1843-1851) and Ontario Bank (1813-1857). (Haxby shows that most of the notes from these two banks for 1846 are basically unknown.) In July, H. Hopkins registered at the Astor Hotel in New York listing home as Baltimore. On Aug 17, a notice appeared regarding currency stolen from Chas Smead which included $70 in Ontario bank bills, five $10ís and one $20. Serial numbers noted. In January, both banks had their currency listed as trading at Ω% discount. Counterfeit Ontario Bank notes were noted and found in June. 1861: Columbia Bank issues bills; 1867: specie vs. paper money issue; 1867: Montana Bank receives $250 in U. S. Treasury notes; 1876: Treasury Received $900 in mutilated notes; 1882: Discovery of coin certificates (currency) House documents; 1887: Discovery Treasury notes, destruction of U.S. notes; 1889: mutilated currency; 1892: currency versus specie issue; 1897: National bank currency issue; 1906 Distinctive paper for currency needed; 1918: Russia currency; various modern topics.
