Two biographical books about General George A. Custer:
1. "A Complete Life of Major Gen. George A. Custer." Frederick Whittaker. First Edition. 1876. A biography of Custer, Major-General of volunteers, Brevet Major-General U.S. Army, and Lieutenant-Colonel Seventh U.S. Cavalry, as written by Whittaker, who was Brevet Captain Sixth New York Veteran Cavalry. This first biography of General George A. Custer was published late in 1876, only months after Custer's death at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Starts with his childhood in Ohio, cadetship at West Point, courtship of Elizabeth Bacon, and service as a cavalryman in the Civil War. 648 pp. 9.5" x 6". Minor repairs first few pages. Rebound using original cover cloth.
2. "The Reno Court of Inquiry." Chicago Times account. Second Edition. 1983. Editorials and miscellaneous articles from The Chicago Times, Jan. 14 to Feb. 12, 1879. Introduction by Robert M. Utley, American author and historian, in which Utley criticizes Whittaker's book: "... the book presented the Little Bighorn disaster as a failure of subordinates rather than the consequence of the commander's errors." Articles within the book cover Major Marcus A. Reno's appearances before an Army Court of Inquiry regarding his part in the massacre. The evidence warranted no further judicial cognizance after four weeks of testimony. 476 pp. 8.5" x 7". Fine.
