This quartermaster document is dated December 13, 1878 and signed by "Charles A. Varnum/ 1st Lt. R.Q.M. 7 Cav." bottom right; from Fort Abraham Lincoln. The signature is fine and large print. An ink stain and hole in the document. Charles Varnum got a promotion on July 25th, 1876 (to 1st Lt.) for leading a unit of Indian scouts and identifying the Sioux village at dawn with Custer. He would survive the battle by joining Reno and Benteen's units. Varnum would later receive the Medal of Honor for valor at the battle of White Clay Creek, S.D. by designing a safe withdrawal of troops in 1897.
