This is a cut-square of Robert M. West, labeled with the rank of "Major Penna. Artillery", from the Civil War era. 3 in. X 6 in. A clear signature and rank. General Robert M. West was with Custer's 7th Cavalry at the battle of the Washita, where Chief Black Kettle's Cheyenne encampment was destroyed (1868). For his observation of that battle Captain West brought court martial charges against General Custer for murder. These charges resulted in a suspension for General Custer, but the charges were later dropped. Clearly there was bad blood between these two men. Captain West would later be suspended from service in the army due to drunkeness and resigned his commision in 1869. He died six months later. [] [] [] [] []
