This cabinet card is of First Lt. James Calhoun of the 7th Cavalry. The bottom of the card has been trimmed and likely taken in 1875. A hand written description is on the back. 4.25 in. X 6 in. James was George Custer's brother-in-law married to George's sister Maggie. James lost his life at the Battle of the Little Big Horn along with Thomas and George Custer. A story exists that Maggie baked him a cake prior to the battle and was part of the pack train; a victory that he would never taste. There is also a written note signed by James from Fort Abraham Lincoln dated August 11, 1875 with G.A. Custer's name. The card is in very good condition with great color contrast. The note and signature are clear.
