This lot holds the discharge paper for a Pennsylvania soldier after successfully completing his tour of duty in 1863. A clear signature of M.A. Reno lower right. There is also a cut-square 1.5 in. X 2.5 in. with a bold signature. Major Marcus A. Reno a graduate of West Point and a career soldier took six years to graduate due to excessive demerits; foreshadowing his military career. A successful officer during the Civil War, he survived the Battle of the Little Big Horn only to be criticized for his drunkenness' and cowardice. A large portion of his men killed early in the battle after a southerly approach through timber only to join Benteen's men and held down for the duration and unable to assist General Custer's men. This would haunt his for the rest of his life.
