This is a canceled check written by S.D. Sturgis in 1909; a career soldier and a graduate of the famous class of 1846 of which many grads. would later fight for the union or the confederacy. He became Commander of the 7th Cavalry in 1869 but was in St. Louis at the time of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The town of Sturgis, South Dakota is named after him.
