Major Joseph Tilford, the son a a War of 1812 Colonel, was given a "leave of absence" during the Black Hills campaign and was able to miss the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The town of Tilford, South Dakota is named after him. A cut square signature remains identifying him with the 7th Cavalry.
Thaddeus Harlan Stanton was Chief of Scouts during the Battle of the Little Big Horn and was known as the "Fighting Paymaster". Serving under General Crook he managed to survive the battle . Our document is dated 1866 for payment to a soldier with his autograph in good contrast.
There is a signed document by Frederick M. Gibson 1st Lt. with Company H survived the Battle of the Little Big Horn under Reno's command. Large visible signature. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
2nd Lt. Henry Jackson a graduate of the Academy served with all of Custer's campaigns and was on "leave of absence" during the famous battle. His cut square autograph depicts him as a Captain with the 7th Cavalry.
2nd Lt. Frederick Dent Grant, son of President Grant, was with Custer's 1874 campaign, however he was granted "leave of absence" in June of 1876 for is daughter's birth. He was promoted to 1st Lt. on June 28th, 1876. A cut square with his signature remains.
A cut square signature for Major General Alfred Terry remains. He was General Custer's commanding officer. 2 in. X 4 in.
2nd Lt. Charles Larned, a graduate of the Academy class of '70, was on "special duty" with the War Dept. and missed the battle of the Little Big Horn. He went back to teach at the academy. A cut square with his signature remains.
1st Lt. James Bell was on special assignment to survey the border with Canada and did not take part in the battle of the Little Big Horn. A cut square has his signature as 7th cav. Post Adjutant 1.5 in. X 3.25 in.
A cut square signature of Thomas McDougall remains. A Captain of Company B was assigned to the pack train that lagged sadly behind. He joined Reno's command and retrieved the body of Lt. Hodgson and survived the battle.
An endorsed check has Luther Hare's signature on the back. Luther was assigned to the Indian scouts and later jointed Reno's command during the battle. He survived the battle and would later be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
The discharge papers for Sgt. Meig Lefler is dated Jan. 7th, 1892 signed by Anson Mills, Charles Hatfield, James Locket, and Meig Lefler. Sgt. Lefler served with Custer in every major battle of the Black Hill Campaign, and was attached with the pack train when it arrived at Reno's unit on the hill.
