"Tenting on the Plains, or, General Custer in Kansas and Texas." Elizabeth B. Custer, Gen. George Custer's wife. First edition, 1887, Charles L. Webster & Co. Dedication reads, "To him whose brave and blithe endurance made those who followed him forget, in his sunshiny presence, half the hardship and the danger."
After her husband and five of the 12 companies of the 7th Cavalry were wiped out at the Battle of the Little Big Horn in June 1876, many in the press, Army, and government criticized him for having blundered into a massacre. Fearing that her husband would be made a scapegoat by history, Elizabeth became a fierce defender of her husband's legacy. She assisted Frederick Whittaker, the author of the first biography of George, which praised his career and set the tone for future biographers. She began writing articles and making speaking engagements praising the glory of what she presented as her "martyred" husband. She wrote three books—Boots and Saddles (1885), Tenting on the Plains (1887), and Following the Guidon (1890). She remained utterly devoted to her husband and never remarried. 702 pp. 6" x 9". Dust jacket. Excellent condition.
